We are all connected
“If we and the rest of the back-boned animals were to disappear overnight, the rest of the world would get on pretty well. But if the invertebrates were to disappear, the world’s ecosystems would collapse.”
Sir David Attenborough
Insects often get a bad press. The easily overlooked, smallest species can be the most critical to the health to the world around us. Humans tend to prefer animals that look like us, so insects – with all of their legs, their bug eyes, bizarre mouth-parts and their erratic movements – are much less appealing.
Yet insects dominate all but the coldest and saltiest parts of the planet. They are part of the fabric of ecosystems across the globe, performing tasks and filling roles that are essential for the health of natural environments.
