The beetle displayed here appears as if it has just been lifted from the pages of a scientific paper on the development of remote-controlled ‘cyborg beetles’ by the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Scientists controlled the mid-air movements of beetles and hope that one day, it will be possible to use cyborg beetles as mini-drone sensors over difficult terrain. The artist Pavel Krusanov was captivated by this idea and created this animatronic version of the longhorn beetle (Dorysthenes granulosus). This beetle is native to South-East Asia where it could be an important pest of sugarcane.
